The Division of Animal Resources within the Emory National Primate Research Center at Emory University is currently seeking an individual to join our team of animal care personnel as Supervisor of Animal Care (non-human primates (NHP)). Our work consists of providing regular husbandry services to the animals. The ideal candidate should be motivated, dependable, have a positive attitude and have a passion to work with animals.

The selected candidate’s responsibilities include observation of animals for signs of illness, trauma, or social instability and report to the appropriate veterinary staff. Supervises the maintenance of research animals, cages, and facilities to ensure compliance with federal animal and research regulatory requirements. Should have the ability to lift up to 57 pounds.

Hours/Weekends/Holidays: 7:30am - 4:00pm Monday through Friday, alternating weekends and Holidays.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises the daily operation of one large animal care facility or multiple small facilities.

  • Assists investigative and veterinary staff.

  • Observes animals for signs of illness, trauma, or social instability and reports abnormalities to the appropriate veterinary staff.

  • Monitors the administration of special diets and medication.

  • Supervises the maintenance of research animals, their cages, and facilities.

  • Ensures that the facility complies with federal animal and research regulations.

  • Collects medical specimens.

  • Trains and supervises staff. Performs related responsibilities as required.

  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.

  • Four years of animal husbandry or related animal care experience which must include one year of laboratory animal experience and one year in a lead or supervisory capacity.

  • The ability to lift up to 75 pounds.

PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills, high school diploma or equivalent, four years of animal husbandry or related animal care experience which must include laboratory animal experience.

  • Must have one year experience in a lead position and certification at some level with AALAS.
